On June 25, Assemblyman Lloyd
Levine’s AB 1634 passed the Senate Local Government Committee 3-2.
Although substantially amended, make no mistake:
AB 1634 still calls for the mandatory
spay/neuter of pets. It is a
measure cobbled together behind closed doors and released at the last
possible moment to deny public comment or input.
As amended, AB 1634 will force the sterilization of dogs after three
"complaints" are made to animal control (two for cats).
No appeals are allowed,
a veterinarian's objection
holds no weight, and
alleged “bad behavior” need not be
substantiated nor witnessed by animal control.
Under AB 1634, cities and counties will see increased costs, more pets
will be abandoned as owners face substantial fines, and euthanasia
numbers will increase.
Next stop for AB 1634 is the Senate Appropriations Committee. Please
write, call or fax Members of the Committee to voice your opposition to
AB 1634 – a costly, last-minute ambush against pet owner rights.
Again, thank you for your efforts in helping us defeat the statewide
mandatory sterilization bill,
but we have more work ahead. Thank you.
